AN INTERVIEW
Mr. Aaron stared at his phone screen for some seconds and signed before he dropped his phone and looked at me.
“Okay, like I was saying, work here is not like work in other companies.
Other companies resume work by 7:30 a. m., but we resume here by 8:00 a. m., well, that’s a thirty-minute difference, hahahaha, and since you are applying for the post of a secretary, you are going to end your day depending on the CEO’s schedule.
“Once his schedule states that he leaves early, you are lucky to leave early, and once his schedule states that he leaves late, then you are also to leave late.”
“That is the most important duty you have to uphold, for the rest, the CEO will tell you that,” Mr. Aaron explained so nicely that anyone would understand him without asking a single question.
“Okay, sir,” I replied. But something was baffling me, I needed to ask this question.
Was he considering giving me this job, or has he given me the job just like that without asking me any questions?
This wasn’t what I expected, though.
I just wasn’t sure of this job, but right now I am in the middle of being sure and confused at the same time.
“Are you sure you noted down all I said because, with the expression on your face, it doesn’t seem like you understood what I said a few minutes ago?” Mr. Aaron spoke out a bit loudly as I snapped back into reality.
“Yes, sir, I understand every single detail,” I said as I also nodded my head to show that I was extremely sure that I understood everything he said. And that was the truth.
“Okay, that’s good. The C. E. O. loves to drink black tea, hot and without sugar, make sure to remember without sugar, if you do otherwise, there will be trouble, and you must take it to him immediately when he enters his office.
“I know you would be asking how you are supposed to know when he enters his office,”
“Your office will be close to his, so that means you are to be extra vigilant every morning in order to know when he enters his office, and you are not to pester him unless there is an important issue.”
“Well, everything you need would be in your office.” Mr. Aaron finally stopped talking as he glanced at his phone screen and looked at him.
“Most importantly, do not send anyone into his office without getting his permission because he hates when people come uninvited, and I know you would never want to get fired.”
“So you have to be physically, spiritually, and emotionally stable to work with the CEO of Seamus Group of Companies, and another thing you will need to be ready for at any time is that you will be following the CEO of Seamus Group of Companies on business trips in and out of the country, you will need to cope with that.”
“Okay,” Mr. Aaron said with a thoughtful facial expression as he looked down at his watch.
But how in heaven’s name am I supposed to remember all these too many rules and regulations?
How am I to remember how he likes his tea?
How am I supposed to remember the tea he loves to drink and not give him another flavour or even go to the extent of putting sugar in it?
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes to digest everything I had heard.
“Mr. Aaron, I really appreciate you explaining all these to me, and I really appreciate it, thank you so much.” I let out a sign as I appreciated Mr. Aaron while he stared at me.
“That’s okay for now, you can actually thank me later. I just pray you are tough enough to withstand this job because the CEO of Seamus Group of Companies has very bad behaviour, character, and a great mood swing, which can get one fired. You need to be very careful with him,” Mr. Aaron added as he placed his hand on his forehead to slightly massage it.
Another rule again, or would I call it a warning?
“God, I needed a good and great job, not a problematic one at that,” I said to myself.
“Mmm, did you say something?” Mr. Aaron asked, “Maybe he heard me or maybe not,” and I prayed he didn’t hear me because that would make him think I wasn’t ready for this job.
And come to think of it, this so-called C. E. O., or whatever they call him, whom I haven’t met yet, already inspires a slight fear in me, though I wouldn’t say I am scared.
I didn’t even know what he looked like.
I remember this morning when I was listening to the news, I did get to see his face because I switched off the TV, and right now I really wanted to see the man that made these rules and regulations.
In fact, to hell with him.
At that instant, I made up my mind to live by the rules, and I also prayed I wouldn’t get fired or forget any of the rules, not by mistake or anything else, otherwise, that would be my end.
“Excuse me, Mr. Aaron, but please, like you said, this is the man I will be working for, you said he is the CEO of the Seamus Group of Companies, right?” I asked because I wanted to be sure.
“Yes, he is the CEO of the Seamus Group of Companies, and he is everyone’s boss, he is under no one.”
“And wait, are you trying to tell me you don’t know the CEO of the Seamus Group of Companies?” Mr. Aaron asked, and I nodded my head because, truly, I didn’t even know what he looked like.
“Yes, I asked because I didn’t know what he looked like.”Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
“I am so sorry, what I meant was that I don’t know him, I know nothing about him, and this is my first time hearing about him,” I replied, and that was nothing but the truth.
And another thing that baffled me was the fact that I was going to work for the owner of the company.
