Dear Contract Wife, You Are Mine

Chapter 5

Title: Acting weird

Maybelline Walter POV

“Mr… Mr. Miles?” I blinked my eyes a few times to be sure that I wasn’t seeing wrong. I mean, he told me yesterday night that he went to Texas, so how come he was here this morning?

“I took a flight at night and arrived just a few minutes ago. Did you sleep well?” He asked me with a soft smile playing on his lips, and that threw me off because it was really crazy. This wasn’t the same Mr. Miles that I’ve been working with. He had never smiled at me for once, and this felt so fucking confusing.

“Are you ok? You look… shocked. Did something happen?” He asked as he raised one of his eyebrows, and I swallowed nothing. How was I supposed to be okay when he was acting so weird?

“Uhm… Ye… yes,” I stuttered as I finally sat up on the bed. I yawned tiredly and wiped nothing from my face with the back of my palm. I had never slept so well in a while. The bed was comfy and I really enjoyed my sleep.

“Adelie already made breakfast. You should come down for it. I’ll be waiting, wife,” He uttered in the calmest voice I’ve ever had.

“Uhm… I’ll use the restroom,” I quickly stood from the bed and advanced toward the bathroom. Just before I walked into the bathroom, I looked back at him and found him staring at me with a smile on his face which disappeared almost immediately when I looked at him.

I dashed into the bathroom and slammed the door behind me, crashing against the door afterward. My heart pounded hard against my chest as I tried to catch my breath which was hitching earlier.

“What was that?” I whispered as I rested my head on the door. Mr. Miles was scaring me and I was beginning to doubt if this place was safe for me and my baby.

Talking about my baby, I held my stomach and closed my eyes. I didn’t know if I should be happy or not. All this time that I have been with Oscar I’ve always looked forward to having a baby with him. I’ve always looked forward to having a child who’ll be a sibling to me since I never had one, and now that my dream had finally come true, I was happy with a touch of pain and sadness.

Brushing all my thoughts away, I proceeded to do my usual daily routine which included brushing my teeth and cleaning myself, and by the time I was done, it was already an hour.

As I had expected, Mr. Miles was not in the room when I walked back inside, so I went ahead to cream my body and dressed casually since I had nowhere to go.

I counted my steps down the walkway after I left my room, and the sweet aroma coming from the kitchen welcomed me as I descended the staircase minutes later. My stomach grumbled hungrily as if I hadn’t eaten anything for days, and my mouth salivated just at the smell of that.

“You are here? Come have a seat,” He beckoned to the chair across from him, and I gave him a long confusing stare before I finally went to sit on the empty chair.

“Do you want me to serve you myself or should I call Adelie to do that?” He asked calmly, and again, I stared at him for a few seconds.

“I’ll help myself,” My voice barely came out because everything still seemed confusing to me. From having a nightstand with my boss, to signing a marriage contract with him, and now being all sweet around me like he had never been before. What is he up to?

“Hmm,” He nodded.Content property of NôvelDra/ma.Org.

My hands slightly trembled as I served myself, throwing him peeps at every slightly given opportunity, and he was just smiling as he ate.

“What exactly is going on, Mr. Miles? Why are you acting weird?” I was going to ask him, but his phone started to ring so I had to wait.

“Excuse me,” He said to me as he picked up his phone lying on the desk, swiped the answer button, and held it to his ear.

“Hmm… Right now?” He said to whoever called him as he checked his wristwatch.

“Alright. I’ll be there shortly. Hmm… Alright,” He said on the phone before he brought his phone down from his ear.

“Uhm… Mr. Miles…”

“May, I need to leave for office now. Something urgent came up there. Let’s have dinner together when I come home tonight,” He said hurriedly, then took the steamy tea on the table and gulped down everything.

“Call me if you need anything. Adelie is here to attend to your needs,” He further said then grabbed his briefcase from beside him and scurried out.

“This is crazy,” I mumbled as I reclined on the chair.

“Do you need anything, ma’am?” I turned to find Adelie standing beside me.

“Nothing. I’m fine,” I replied to her, and she nodded.

“Alright, ma’am. Call me if you need anything. I need to attend to something,” She bowed slightly and walked away.

I breathed out frustratingly and resumed eating.

After I was done eating, I cleared the table since it’s what I’d always done before I came here. I couldn’t just allow Adelie to do everything for me. I’m not that kind of a person.

I headed back to my room and when I walked inside, I found my phone screen on, so I reached out for it and sank on the bed. Two missed calls and a text from Lily popped on the screen as soon as I unlocked the phone.

‘Where did you keep your phone? Let’s hang out together, babe. I have a day off at the office today. Let’s use it together. I’ll come over to pick you up soon. Send me your address, then get dressed and wait for me’ I read through her text, and I couldn’t help myself but smile excitedly. At least my day won’t be spent boringly here.

Did I forget to mention this before? Well, aside from being a nurse, Lily was from an average wealthy family. She has a car and an apartment of her own too. She is well-to-do.

‘Alright. I’ll be waiting. Here is the address’ I typed the message on my phone and was going to send it to her when I recalled that I was married to Miles now and I needed to let him know about it.

I wiped the message, then scrolled through my phone and when I finally spotted his number, I dialed it. I waited for him to answer as the phone rang, and after what seemed like forever, he finally answered the call.

“I’ll call you back, May. I’m in the middle of a meeting,” He whispered from the other end and the call disconnected immediately. Again, I was left shocked. Mr. Miles never received calls whenever in the middle of a meeting, so what was up with this weird acting?

‘I called to tell you that I want to hang out with my friend, Lily’ I texted him, and his reply came in barely one minute later.

‘Alright. I’ll call you right after I’m done with the meeting. Take care, and make sure you share me your live location’ His message popped on the screen of my phone, and I sighed…
