Chapter 786
Connor laid everything out, and Chloe felt a wave of relief. She realized that their issues weren't as big as they seemed. The silent treatment wasn't doing their marriage any favors, and since Connor took the first step, she was more than willing to meet him halfway.
Connor's face softened, and with a hint of playfulness, he asked, "If I and your friend both fell into the water, who would you save?"
"That's such a silly question," Chloe replied.
"I just want to know," Connor persisted.
"I'd save you. My friend knows how to swim," Chloe said with a grin.
"I can swim too, Chloe. Give me a real answer."
Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck, nuzzling his cheek. "Still you. You're the most important person in my heart."
Connor finally relaxed. He asked the question to give Chloe a way out of their tense situation, and he knew her answer was her way of doing the same for him. Neither of them wanted to stay stuck in a frosty stalemate because of Grant. It was time to take a step back.
Connor had his moment of clarity. Teddy had been right; if Grant really had some hidden agenda, Connor's behavior was only giving him more opportunities. Teddy had also joked, "If Grant's playing games, are you really going to let him outsmart you? You've always got one more trick up your sleeve."
"What trick?" Connor had asked.
"The irresistible charm," Teddy had replied with a wink.
So, Connor softened first, his complaint more of a playful tease. Chloe always fell for it. She liked seeing him play the role of a Trophy Boy. Privately, Connor didn't mind playing along; he could be whatever Chloe wanted. What he didn't like was the idea that Chloe might see him as unreliable because of it. That's why he wasn't fond of the Trophy Boy label.
But this time, the stakes were different. He couldn't let foolish pride create cracks for others to exploit He pulled Chloe closer, holding her tight. Honey, I've missed you so much these past few days, I've been going crazy..."
Chloe felt her cheeks warm up.
"How about a little fun in the car? No one can see us," Connor suggested, his voice thick with desire. His hand had already found its way under her shirt.
Chloe gave him a few quick kisses and playfully pinched his cheek. "I'd love to, but someone's coming."
She quickly shifted back to her seat, and Connor frowned as he looked outside. The butler was approaching and knocked on the window a few seconds later. The windows were tinted, so no one could see inside, and the butler usually wouldn't bother them unless it was important.
Connor rolled down the window, clearly annoyed. "This better be good."
The butler, a bit taken aback by Connor's tone, said, "Connor, Miss Claire saw you two come in and wants you inside quickly. We've got guests today."noveldrama
"Claire's here?" Connor asked in surprise.
"Jeffery and Marian aren't around. What guests are you talking about?"
"It's the Nagel family. They're here to discuss the wedding plans for young master Pax and Miss Eve with Miss Claire," the butler explained.
