Chapter 789
Chloe paused for a moment, caught off guard. Her eyes darkened as she put on an indifferent expression. "Did you need something from me, Claire?"
Claire, as always, was the picture of elegance, but her tone was still condescending. "Is this really how you talk to your elders?"
"We're equals," Chloe replied, her voice calm and detached.
Claire brushed past Chloe, making her way into the house. "Connor's 19 years younger than me. How does that not make me his elder?"
Chloe shot back with a smirk, "Sounds like his bad luck."
Claire turned, her eyes icy and sharp. Then she laughed, a biting sound. "You've got a sharp tongue and guts. No wonder those two are fighting over you."
"Claire, cut to the chase," Chloe said flatly. She knew Claire's visit wasn't a coincidence.
"Do you know why Pax agreed to tie the knot with the Nagel family?"
Chloe's brow furrowed, a sense of dread creeping in. "Why?"
"Because I threatened him with you," Claire revealed.
Chloe felt like she'd been punched in the chest. "What?"
"I told him if he didn't fall in line, I'd make your life difficult-maybe stage a car accident, stir up trouble, or even have a chat with your moms back in Riverbrook. The poor guy was so rattled, he agreed to everything."
Claire sighed, "That boy is head over heels for you."
Chloe's hands balled into fists. "How can you be so ruthless?"
Claire chuckled, "My son is nothing like me; he wouldn't even dream of playing dirty told him to get you away from his uncle, but he was just concerned about your happiness. Do you have any idea how much he's sacrificed for you? He even joined the company for your sake. And remember when you threw that rock and hit my forehead? Why do you think I let it slide?" Claire smiled knowingly at Chloe. "Pax took the fall for you. The peaceful life you're enjoying is all thanks to him bearing the brunt. Bet you didn't know that, did you?"
Chloe's fists tightened, her shoulders trembling. "Why are you telling me this?"
Chloe wasn't blind to Claire's
intentions. Pax was, after all, her son. They shared a bond that couldn't be severed. If Claire and Connor turned against her, Pax would be the one hurt most. She was using Pax as both a shield and a weapon. It was a blatant ploy.
Claire gave a small laugh. "It's nothing. I just think it's a shame that my son's deep affection goes unnoticed."
Chloe took a deep breath. "Pax is your son. Can't you leave him out of our issues?"
Chloe looked at Claire like she was facing a devil. How could someone be so heartless?
"He'll never just stand by. He promised he'd always protect you," Claire said, standing up and moving closer to Chloe. "Chloe, here's your last chance.
If you choose to leave Connor and be with Pax, I'll call off his engagement to Eve."noveldrama
Chloe found her composure. Turning to Claire, she spoke firmly. "Let me be clear, Claire. No matter what, I'm standing by Connor. Even if it means going against the world, I'll be with him. We're inseparable, and nothing will change that."
Chloe continued, "Pax is your son,
et
and it's his misfortune to have you as a mother. Don't try to guilt-trip me. All I can say is that using your own child this way is despicable. Remember, karma's a thing, and one day you'll face the consequences of what you've done."
