Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Meanwhile, Leah was brought into the meeting room on the first floor. By then, Ethan still had his mask on, so she couldn’t tell who he was. However, she recognized Derek.
“I really don’t know who she was. She had a mask on, so I couldn’t see her face.” She felt wronged.
“Then, why were you helping her? You better think before you speak. You should know how serious things will get if I personally get involved in investigating it,” Derek said in a threatening manner to make her speak the truth. Since he was a police chief, he was an expert at interrogations.
“B-Because I was threatened at gunpoint?” Leah wavered and avoided looking at both of them.
“If she did threaten you by pointing a gun at you, then the first thing you should have done when the lift door opened was to shout for help instead of pretending to be injured and stop the staff members from entering the lift.” Ethan scoffed, “You better not lie in my face, or I’ll have all the more reason to believe that you’re her accomplice. Earlier on, when she left the hotel, she tossed out a hand grenade that had injured seven men. If we didn’t manage to arrest her, then you…”
“I’m not her accomplice. I swear! I really don’t know her.” Leah’s expression turned grave, and she started trembling with fear.
“This is your last chance to confess.” Ethan was indeed sometimes insensitive toward women.
“She… She threatened me with a secret. So, I had no choice but to help her.”
“Your secret? What is it, and how would she know about it?” Upon hearing that, Derek frowned as he was surprised by the answer while Ethan’s eyes flickered.
“I-It’s about my abortion.” At that point in time, Leah no longer dared to hide anything from them.
Derek’s expression changed, and he immediately looked toward Ethan. At the same time, Ethan raised his brow when he listened to what she said.
“I-I’m telling the truth. What is there for me to hide when I’ve told you something as private as this?” Seeing that they were quiet, Leah got anxious and added, “Right, there was another man in the lift. He was also being threatened by that woman.”
Billy was threatened?! Derek was surprised.
“How did you know?” Derek questioned while staring at her.
“When we were on the third floor, I saw her approaching the man, but initially, the man just ignored her. At that moment, I was standing nearest to them, so I could vaguely hear her speak about the Yeager Family, although the music was loud. However, I wasn’t able to hear the rest of her words, but I noticed the immediate change in the man’s expression. He instantly grabbed her wrist and questioned who she was in a threatening tone.” At the same time, both Ethan and Derek were quiet.
Noticing that, Leah paused before continuing again and speaking faster than usual because she was feeling scared. “That woman didn’t seem to be afraid and merely kept quiet. In the end, the man gave in and decided to help her. After that…” Leah looked over at Ethan, who still had his mask on, and added, “I’m sure you’re aware of the events that followed after that. I was petrified the moment when I saw that she was all covered in blood. She was the one who dragged me into the lift and threatened me using the piece of information which I feared most about being known by others. I really had no choice.”
“What was the information which she threatened Billy with? The secrets of the Yeager Family?” Derek’s tone was firm. “It must be something unusual and not known by others. But why would that woman know about it? How would she know about the Yeager Family matters…”Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
With that, Ethan turned his gaze at Leah and uttered, “How would she know that you have gotten an abortion?” Regardless of whether it was about the Yeager Family’s matter or Leah’s abortion, both were extremely private information that outsiders normally wouldn’t even know of.
“That woman must have known Billy and Miss Summers.” Derek soon came to a conclusion. “She must have been familiar with them.”
“Yes, she recognizes me. In fact, I had a mask on at that time, and she was able to call out my name. I was surprised at that.” Leah nodded in agreement.
It didn’t seem like they were acquaintances, as she seemed to know them quite well. She was familiar with both Leah and Billy. She must have recognized Billy at the ballroom when she threatened him.
“Out of the people that you know, is there anyone who has special ties with Billy or even the Yeager Family?” Ethan went straight to the important point.
“Alice Woland—Derek’s fiancee. When she was just in her early teens, both the Woland and Yeager Families seemed to have already settled on this marriage.” Alice suddenly came to Derek’s mind before Leah could answer the question.
The reason Derek knew about it was that earlier on, and he heard his cousin talking about Bruce, whom she had a crush on. Because of that, she sounded harsh when she spoke of Alice.
“Alice Woland? Ethan glanced at Leah and asked, “Do you know her?” If Bruce and Leah were both close to Alice, then she would be suspicious.
“Of course, I know her. She’s the eldest daughter of the Woland Family, and she is…” Leah paused and continued unwillingly, “She is a raving beauty.” Alice’s beauty could even wreak havoc.
“Ahh, a raving beauty!” Derek’s focus seemed to have shifted. Turned out that the woman Ethan was so adamant about capturing was actually a beauty! What else could be more exciting than that?
Hearing that, Ethan looked at Derek coldly, but Derek replied to him with a grin, “Boss, a raving beauty, huh?”
“But Alice is dumb and stupid. Both of us used to be classmates, and she was so stupid that she never got more than 30 marks for all of her exams. Sometimes, she even got marks that were less than 10. Moreover, she only got 56 marks for her college entrance exam, and because of that, she broke the record for the lowest marks achieved by a student in the history of our school. Since she is just a bimbo, I heard that the Woland Family refused to give her any of their properties, and Bruce had always wanted to call off the marriage.” Leah was annoyed at how excited Derek looked after hearing that Alice was a raving beauty. What’s the use of having beautiful looks when she’s empty inside?
“If that’s the case, then the woman shouldn’t be Alice.” Derek immediately calmed himself down after realizing that he might have gotten happy too early.
“That’s not necessarily the case.” Ethan’s gaze darkened as he thought about it.
He knew within some of the big families, and there were some members who chose to hide their true capabilities. If someone within the family was seen as an heir, it would sometimes be favorable for that person to hide their strength in order to protect themselves or even achieve a certain objective. He wondered whether Alice was put in this position. Earlier on, when Leah mentioned that Bruce had always wanted to call the wedding off, it could be Alice’s or even the Woland Family’s intention.
“Boss, that can’t be. It’s a miracle that someone who barely passed the college entrance exam didn’t die of stupidity. How could she manage to escape from you?” Derek couldn’t even believe such possibilities.
“Get your man to bring Billy over to the police station.” Ethan didn’t argue with Derek about the issue but instead changed the topic.
