Regret of Darian
“This is what you asked for last night,” David said as he placed a brown envelope containing the requested documents on Darian’s desk. Last night, before going to the J-Rock night club, Darian instructed David to gather all the information about Fahira.
“I apologize in advance, sir, but couldn’t you just access Fahira’s identity through the employee data?” David continued, momentarily stopping Darian’s hand as he was about to open the brown envelope, and looked at David sharply.
“It’s better if you leave, I want to be alone,” Darian said irritably, waving his hand to dismiss David from his office.
Realizing Darian’s restlessness, David chose to leave, although curiosity now lingered in his mind. From the information he gathered last night, David suspected there was a special relationship between the boss and his secretary. However, on the other hand, David knew Fahira’s nature. Besides being physically beautiful, she was also a very kind person. She never caused any trouble with anyone. As far as David could see, their relationship was just normal, the usual relationship between a boss and his employee.
David returned to his cubicle and absentmindedly played with the computer mouse. His focus was solely on Fahira, who appeared focused on her work at her computer. Her slender fingers danced nimbly on the keyboard. She was so engrossed that she didn’t even notice David had been observing her. David was still contemplating and connecting the recent changes in Darian’s behavior. But as for Fahira? David shook his head, as her behavior remained the same as usual.
Thud! A stray pen hit David right on his forehead as he continued to gaze at Fahira. “Focus on your work, will you!” Ray teased, causing David to stand up, ready to retaliate.
“Watch out!” David grumbled, throwing the pen back at Ray, who managed to catch it.
“By the way, David, you’ve been staring at Fahira all this time. Sure, she’s beautiful, who wouldn’t admit that Fahira is beautiful and smart!” Ray praised enthusiastically. David got up, about to give Ray a lesson, but a voice stopped him.
“Stop being noisy!” Mira scolded, feeling annoyed by her two colleagues’ antics.
“Just let them be, Sis. Indulging them only delays our work!” Fahira said with a smile, glancing at everyone before returning to her work.
In his office, Darian remained silent, holding a piece of paper that contained something that deeply affected him. The information about Fahira turned out to be beyond his expectations.
Fahira Ramadhani was the daughter of Pramudya Abdillah and Fatimah Az-Zahra. Her father was a renowned judge in the city of Surabaya. Fahira and her entire family were declared dead in a single accident. With trembling hands, Darian looked at each photo of Fahira’s family when they were still together, and then a news article about the car accident they were involved in. The car crashed into a highway barrier, fell into a ravine, and exploded.
Darian rubbed his face roughly as all the facts about Fahira were revealed before his eyes. He took a pause to prepare himself for the truth that he would discover next.
Between doubt and curiosity, Darian opened another file. His heart seemed to stop beating when he read the evidence of bank transactions from his personal account to Fahira’s personal account. With narrowed eyes, Darian continued to read the evidence of Fahira transferring 110 million rupiahs to the Medica Center hospital two days after they spent the night together. Darian stopped for a moment to calm the turmoil in his heart. He reached for a glass of water and quickly drank it before continuing to read.
“Nazriel Ramadhan!” he murmured and read all the detailed information about Ariel.
Darian’s body suddenly felt weak as he read the doctor’s diagnosis of Ariel’s illness and the heart ablation surgery he had undergone. Repeatedly, Darian took deep breaths to calm himself. He felt extremely guilty and remorseful towards Fahira. How could he have been happy that night while Fahira was going through a struggle for her younger brother’s life? Ariel was the only family Fahira had left.
For a long time, Darian remained still, his eyes closed, enjoying the warm embrace of the morning sun. But this time, it felt different. He was angry at himself. The ringing of the phone on his desk, which had been echoing in the room, failed to disturb the stillness of his heart. Shortly after, a knock on the door forced Darian to open his eyes. He knew who was standing behind the door – the woman he had wronged.
“Come in!” Darian said without diverting his gaze from the beautiful morning view of Jakarta.
“I apologize, sir, Miss Alea wants to meet with you!” Fahira said, looking at the back of the chair where Darian remained seated.
“I don’t want to meet anyone, tell David to handle that woman!” Darian replied, and Fahira immediately complied. Fahira could sense a different atmosphere around her boss, probably the effect of the alcohol from last night. From the information Fahira had heard from David, the effects of alcohol could significantly affect a person’s physical and mental condition. So, she assumed that Darian might be feeling unwell.
“Alright, sir!” Fahira replied before leaving.
Darian closed his eyes again. He didn’t want to avoid Fahira, but he didn’t think he could bear to look into her eyes, which always revealed vulnerability – something he had only just realized today.
Outside the room, Alea was angrily berating Fahira after she conveyed Darian’s message to David. Alea was furious that Darian flatly refused to meet her. She was about to force her way into Darian’s office, but David stopped her. “I’m sorry, Miss, it’s better if you leave before I have to be rude to you!” David said firmly.
“Beware, all of you! I’ll report this to Aunt Yasmin and get you all fired!” Alea threatened, which made David take action. He immediately dragged Alea out before their big boss got disturbed, and of course, David would be the one to face Darian’s wrath if that happened.
“Fahira, do you feel that the boss has been acting differently lately?” Mira whispered, standing beside Fahira.
“Well, hasn’t the boss always been moody?” Fahira replied casually before returning to her seat.
“True, but…” Mira continued, but her sentence was left hanging when she noticed David’s gaze. As for Ray, he didn’t care about the women’s conversation. He picked up the phone on his desk and dialed the pantry extension.
“Three coffees and two iced teas, as usual!” Ray ordered to the office boy through the phone.
“Good job!” praised Mira, giving Ray a thumbs up.
“It’s perfect! A weapon to keep the boss awake when his mood strikes!” David added, then returned to his seat.
Shortly after, an office boy arrived with a tray carrying Ray’s order. However, before David could take a sip of his steaming coffee, his phone rang, showing the boss’s name on the screen. Annoyed, he placed the coffee back on the table and answered Darian’s call.
“Shit!” David whispered softly, still audible to the others. “Now you’ll see! Prepare for Boss’s gentle wrath!” Ray mocked with a suppressed laughter, while Susi, Mira, and Fahira just shook their heads. Among the four colleagues sharing the same office space, Susi was the most indifferent and quiet. She was a reserved girl but agile and detail-oriented when it came to work.
“Pray for my safety, guys!” David said as he walked towards Darian’s office, while the others responded by raising their clenched fists in support.
With a creak, the door opened, and David entered cautiously. “Can I help you, sir?” he said, looking at the back of Darian’s chair. Darian remained still, his gaze lost in the distance, fixated on the large glass window before him.
“Why is there no information about Fahira’s parents? I asked for complete information yesterday, didn’t I?” Darian replied in a soft but emphatic tone.
“I apologize, sir, but I couldn’t access information about Fahira’s parents. It seems like someone deliberately hid or erased that information. Besides, I don’t have the authority to delve into the accident involving Fahira’s family, as it would violate the law. Some cases cannot be made public, and only certain people have the authority to reopen them,” David explained, causing Darian to turn his oversized chair. This text is property of Nô/velD/rama.Org.
“You reopen that case without Fahira’s knowledge. I want that case thoroughly investigated!” Darian ordered firmly, as he sensed something unusual from the information David had gathered.
“Forgive me for being intrusive, but is there something serious, sir?” David inquired, growing curious about Darian’s motive to reopen the investigation into Fahira’s family accident three years ago.
“My mom conveyed the last message from my dad before the plane crash took his life. He asked us to take good care of Fahira. I don’t know the relationship between my dad and Fahira’s parents. So, I hope to unravel all these mysteries quickly, David,” Darian explained firmly.
“Alright, sir. I will carry out your orders, Mr. Darian. Excuse me,” said David, quickly leaving Darian’s office.
Casually, David walked past his colleagues’ desks. However, he took a moment to glance at Fahira. Now he knew the reason behind Darian’s change in behavior during the past week. Was that woman the cause of Darian’s change?
