I Once Married You (Harper and Benjamin)

Chapter 5

He Will Never Love Her

"I'll be there soon. Keep the nurse stays with you, okay?" Benjamin's voice was gentle, but his jaw was set tightly. His expression, however, changed to something unreadable after hearing Lauren. Lauren was thrilled with his response. "Okay, I'll wait for you."

Once the call was over, Benjamin glanced towards the stairs, his face growing serious. He then asked the maid to remind Harper to have her dinner before he left.

Shortly after, the sound of a car engine filled the air, and Harper watched from the master bedroom window as the black car drove away.

Her face was blank, her smile bitter. Her mind was filled with images of Benjamin rushing to Lauren's side with worry.

Harper thought, "He really does love Lauren. So, what am I still holding out for?"

...

Benjamin didn't come back to Pineview Villa that night. Harper knew he must have stayed at the hospital with Lauren.

It was the first time he'd stayed out overnight, except for business trips, since they'd been married.Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.

Harper didn't text or call him; she had learned to be a dignified, graceful, and understanding wife.

Before marrying Benjamin, her biological mother, Jennifer Mitchell, and other Mitchell women had drilled into her how to be a wife who wouldn't bother her husband.

Harper thought, "I've followed their advice, but why doesn't Benjamin show any affection towards me? The only explanation is that he despises me so much that he can't bring himself to like me." She faced the harsh reality, telling herself, "He doesn't love me, and he never will."

Harper had a restless night and only fell asleep at dawn, but soon after, her phone rang.

It was Benjamin calling.

Harper answered with a slightly hoarse voice, "What's the matter?"

"Are you up?" He asked.

Harper replied, "Yeah."

Benjamin said, "Pack two outfits for Lauren and bring them to the hospital. She doesn't want to be seen like this, so can you deliver them yourself?"

It sounded almost like an order.

Harper blinked, her face pale from lack of sleep. She hesitated, then asked, "You want me to bring them to the hospital?"

"Yes, bring them here," Benjamin confirmed.

"I don't really know Ms. Davis. Wouldn't she be uncomfortable with me seeing her like this?" Harper questioned.

"She'll be fine with it. Just bring them as soon as you can, okay?" Benjamin urged.

Harper bit her lip, her heart aching. She told herself this would be the last time she'd do something she didn't want to for him.

With an indifferent expression, she calmly replied, "I'll be there in an hour."

Afterward, Harper immediately ended the call before Benjamin could respond.

She tried to suppress her emotions, but the pain only grew deeper and more agonizing.

Harper wondered, "Is Benjamin doing this to punish me just because I rode home with Frank last night?"

Regardless of whether it was true or not, she was more eager than ever to end their marriage.

Harper knew that with Lauren awake, this was just the beginning. Benjamin would devote his attention to Lauren every day, and such incidents would happen constantly. Harper couldn't bear the thought of living like that.

She then went to her wardrobe and took two sets of clothes, which were updated every season, but she had never worn them. Afterward, Harper drove to the hospital.

Just as Harper reached the ward and was about to raise her hand to knock on the door, she heard a clear voice from the ward asking, "Benjamin, I must look really ugly now, right? Will Harper laugh at me if she sees me?"
