Chapter 11 What is Dignity Worth?
“Make... a... telephone... call... “ Clara read out a string of numbers as she pressed her nails into the
woman’s neck.
The woman’s legs got weak, and she looked at Ruby for help.
“Don’t mess around Clara......” Ruby didn’t expect Clara to go so far, “Your family’s gone, who else can
you go to for help?”
She and Clara had been friends for several years, and she knew all of her friends. The ones from good
families, she had already bought with bribes.
Clara couldn’t possibly find anyone to help her!
“I’m asking you... to make a call! “ Clara spoke laboriously through clenched teeth. Her nails had
already pierced the woman’s skin on her neck. The woman’s legs were trembling with fright and her
mouth hanged open.
Ruby’s face fell. Fearing that the woman might accidentally say her name, she gritted her teeth and
dialed the number that Clara had told her.
Soon the call connected, “Hello?”
Hearing his familiar voice, Clara’s eyes moistened. Swallowing blood, she laboriously said, “I’m Clara
Rowan...... come to the Y police station...”
As long as he could let her leave to go to the hospital, as long as he could let her see grandma, even if
he wanted her life, she would give it.
What was dignity compared to her only family?
Soon, the police officers heard the disturbance and rushed over.
However, seeing Clara with her hands around a woman’s neck, as if she was trying to die with her, the
police officers did not dare rush in.
Time passed minute by minute, and Ruby didn’t see anyone come.
She felt that Clara had lied and was just trying to encourage the police officers to subdue her when a
man about 30 years old hurried into the detention room.
Clara’s eyes filled with hope after she saw the man and she pleaded, “Bail me...... please, I want to go
to the hospital......”
The man nodded solemnly and quickly turned away.
In less than a minute, the man not only returned, but he also brought the police chief with him!
As the man helped Clara out, the police chief even went so far as to politely ask, “Mr. Cohen, do you
need me to have someone bring you to the hospital? “
“No thank you.”
Ruby watched with shock as the man left the station carrying Clara. She told the police chief, “Sir, Clara © 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
is suspected of murder! How can you let her go?”
“Without concrete evidence, we can’t keep her locked up anymore. “ The chief said impatiently. “If you
have nothing else to do, then hurry up and leave! “
Ruby was extremely angry, but she had no choice but to leave.
She knew that J city’s deputy director had a good relationship with Steve. Because of this, she was
able to easily arrange for people to come in and punish Clara.
She had never thought that Clara would find a backer or be able to call someone to come to the police
station and post bail for her.
After arriving at the hospital with Donny, Clara stumbled into her grandma’s ward and ran into the nurse
who had been taking care of her.
The nurse’s face was full of pain. “Ms. Rowan, my condolences...”
Clara saw a person on the bed behind the nurse covered with a white cloth from head to toe.
At that moment, she felt like her blood had frozen. She felt as if she was suffocating.
“Grandma, grandma?” She moved her stiff legs and walked step by step towards the hospital bed, her
raised hand trembling, “I’m sorry...... it took me so long to come...... it’s Clara......”
She struggled to enunciate the words, calling out to her grandma, but no one answered.
Lifting the white cloth, she saw her grandmother’s cold and pale face. Her knees gave way and she
knelt down, keening and wailing.
“Grandma......”
She had been able to hold on because of grandmother, but now, her only family was dead.
She was full of hatred!
If she had abandoned her so-called dignity and gone to the villa with Donny that day, Steve Lane
wouldn’t have been able to send her to prison, and her grandmother wouldn’t have died.
Clara held her grandmother’s body through the night, crying till she had no tears left.
The day Grandma was buried, the sky was dark, and a light rain was falling.
She watched in a trance as the workers placed a handful of ashes in her grandmother’s urn.
She stood in front of her grandmother’s tombstone, drenched in the rain, until everyone had left.
After today, she no longer had any family.
After her grandmother’s funeral, Clara returned with Donny to Preston Village. She locked herself in her
room for three whole days and didn’t touch the meals sent to her door.
Donny was afraid that something would happen to her if this continued, so he called Ethan Preston.
That night, Ethan came to the villa.
He opened the door with a spare key and found that all the places that let in light in the room were
covered. It was dark and occasionally he could hear a woman crying in her sleep.
“Mama, I’m really afraid....... Take me away.......”
After fumbling around to turn on the lamp Ethan saw a woman curled up on the bed.
In just a few days, her body had become so thin that there was almost no flesh left on it. Her slender
fingers were tightly clutching the sheets. Her hands were thin enough to see the veins on the back of
her hand and tears could be seen on her pale and desperate face.
If this woman didn’t eat, then it was possible she wouldn’t wake up tomorrow!
