Chapter 17 What does a Qualified Ex–Husband Look Like
I was separated from Christopher by a layer of fabric, but I felt the skin around my waist burning.
I couldn’t move at all. Fortunately, my mind was clear. “We’ve made it clear. I don’t want a third person involved in our
marriage.”
Christopher’s forehead rested against my back, and he muttered, “I’m sorry.”
Would I give in?
Of course, I would.
No one could erase years of feelings in an instant.
I really wanted to give in, to give Christopher another chance.
But everything that had happened recently kept replaying in my mind.
Should I choose him or choose myself?
I took a deep breath. “Christopher, you always say you’re wrong, but you’ll make the same mistakes again. It’s pointless.”
This time, I chose myself.
I had chosen him for seven years, and that was enough.
Christopher remained silent for a long time, not saying a word.
“Let go. Our marriage has reached its end.” I couldn’t believe I could say such cold words to Christopher.
What was unrequited love? It was a grand sacrifice that belonged solely to oneself.
With just a glance from Christopher or a beckoning finger, I would excitedly run over.
I would be happy for days.
My excitement would be uncontrollable.
But how could I have known then that one day, all I would think about was leaving?
I didn’t know how I left. When I returned to Riverside Garden, I was still somewhat distracted.
Fortunately, since I had morning sickness, as soon as I lay down, I fell asleep again.
I didn’t have time to overthink.
The next day, I was woken up by the doorbell.

Except for Elissa, no one knew I had moved here.
But she knew the password and could come in directly,
Perhaps someone had mistaken the loot.
I covered my head with the blanket and continued sleeping. I didn’t want to lose my freedom to sleep on weekends.
However, the person outside the door was patient. The doorbell kept ringing incessantly.
I had no choice but to angrily go and open the door.
As soon as I opened it, Christopher’s tall figure blocked the doorway. His deep blue eyes gazed at me intently.
“Are you planning to stay here for long?”
“Of course.”
I thought I had made it clear to Christopher last night.
After I mentioned divorce, it seemed like he had dropped his facade. Now, he looked indifferent. “Come back with me.”
It was an overpowering command.
With Christopher’s perfect and superior features, he looked like an overbearing president.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. “Do you not remember what we talked about last night?”
“What did we talk about?”
He appeared composed, unapologetically saying, “I was drunk. I don’t remember anything.”
“You were quite sober last night.”
I eyed him suspiciously.
“I don’t know. Anyway, I don’t remember.”
“Never mind. It doesn’t matter.”
I didn’t want to say more, so I tried to close the door. But Christopher blocked it with his hand.
He said softly, “Grandpa called. He said he’s coming over for lunch with us.”
“I see.”

I almost forgot about this.
I had only thought about keeping my distance from Christopher after finalizing the divorce, but I hadn’t considered. this aspect.

I stepped aside to let him in, pointing to a pair of cotton slippers at the entrance. “Make yourself comfortable. I’ll be ready in twenty minutes.”
Then, I went to freshen up and put on makeup.
Finally, I changed into an apricot–colored dress and grabbed a knitted jacket before leaving the room..
Christopher was sitting on the sofa, casually opening a battle of mineral water. When he saw me, he tried to start a conversation, saying. This house is well–designed. When did you renovate it?”
A few days after he handed over this house to me, I started renovating it.
I was so focused on the renovation that I left early and came home Inte.
But Christopher never inquired. ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
Even if I came home late, he would at most politely comment on how late it was or mention that the design department seemed busy.
There was never a follow–up question about where I had been or what I had been doing; it was not his concern.
We were already at the point of divorce, and I didn’t want to tolerate anything. “Maybe when you were with Evelyn.”
Sure enough, I saw a hint of stiffness on his face.
I felt more comfortable.
“We haven’t been in touch recently.”
“You don’t need to explain to me.”
It was no longer necessary. I said, “Whether we divorce or not, she won’t affect our relationship.”
“You’re just deceiving yourself.”
After saying this, I walked to the entrance to change my shoes and go downstairs.
The driver had been waiting in the car. As soon as I got in, Christopher followed suit.
On the way, Christopher, who usually didn’t talk much to me, started a conversation again.

He looked down, his gaze falling on my feet. He asked in confusion, “Why haven’t you been wearing high heels lately?”
“Flats are more comfortable.”
After I got pregnant, I hardly wore high heels.
I was afraid it might affect the baby.
“Okay.”

He said lightly. After a moment of contemplation, he asked, “When will the limited–edition series enter production?
1 looked at him in confusion.
Although the “F&A department managed by the design department was considered a luxury brand, it wasn’t a recent focus in the Valence Group’s various industries. Christopher had long relinquished control. I only needed to report on the project in meetings; he never personally inquired.
with
What was going on with him today?
He asked about high heels and the new limited–edition series.
Christopher raised an eyebrow and fake smiled, “What? You’re my subordinate. Can’t I ask about your work?
As an employee, I had to compromise. “Before next Friday.”
The samples were ready. Once I confirm the fit on Monday, I will urge the suppliers to prepare the fabrics. Then, the factory could start production.
“Okay.”
He responded again. I didn’t want to say anything more to him, so I said directly, “Christopher, stop trying to make conversation. Sign the divorce agreement and be a decent ex–husband.”
“What does a decent ex–husband look like?”
“It should be like he’s dead.”
Perhaps my words were too cold. Christopher finally lost interest in talking to me.
His face remained icy until the car entered the courtyard.
Donna greeted us with a smile, “Mr. Bentley is already here. He’s waiting for you both.”
I felt a bit guilty.
I had promised Bentley not to divorce, but now I had moved out.
I looked helplessly at Christopher, hoping he could help with the explanation.

Before I could speak, he had already seen through my intentions and coldly said, “Just treat me as if I’m already dead.”
Leveraging his long legs, he left me behind.
