Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 436

Late at night, Everett wandered into the master bedroom, now eerily empty. It used to feel cozy, but with Selena gone for just a day, the room felt unsettlingly quiet. His dark eyes swept over the room, taking in the absence of her presence.

Many of her things were missing. That morning, she had left with three enormous suitcases, but it was all a ruse. The bodyguard had assured him she hadn't taken a thing. The woman who adored money, who wouldn't lift a finger without payment, had left everything behind for another man. When she loved him, she was fiercely devoted. But when her feelings shifted, she could just as easily throw herself into someone else's arms. She was maddeningly infuriating!

Overwhelmed with emotion, Everett felt like he was suffocating. He yanked off his tie and unbuttoned his shirt, hoping to ease the tightness in his chest. Then, he grabbed a manila envelope and pulled out a stack of prenatal check-up reports and a thick medical record.

This was the second task he had asked Alex to do; he needed to know what Selena had endured in the last months of her pregnancy. As he flipped through the reports, a deep red mist clouded his vision. Everything Callum had said was true. Those months had been filled with danger and pain for her...

He never denied his responsibility for what happened with Mateo. He had been negligent, made mistakes. He had pleaded with her to give him a chance to make things right, but what about her? Why hadn't she confronted or questioned him, full of resentment and anger? Because she didn't care anymore. She didn't want to fix anything between them; she just wanted to escape, to be as far away from him as possible.

With this newfound clarity, it felt like his heart was being ripped apart, leaving him utterly miserable. He lay on the bed, facing the spot where Selena used to sleep, where her pillow still seemed to carry her sweet, lingering scent. Just last night, they had been wrapped up in each other on this very bed...

His fingertips grazed the scratch marks she had left on his neck, which still tingled slightly. He finally understood her guilty, uneasy expression from before. It had been their final goodbye. And yet, even in that last moment, she was so distant, so half-hearted with him.

Everett's chest was a swirl of love

and hatred. He slowly turned his gaze to the night sky outside the window, the vast spread of stars, Coldly, he thought, he would still say it: Selena, if you want to run, run far away, and don't let him cate you. If

he did, he wouldn't give her any

more chances!

In a small hotel room in Spain, Selena had checked in right after leaving the airport that day. Apart from going downstairs for meals, she mostly stayed holed up in her room. The most dangerous place is often the safest, and Everett would never suspect she'd stay so close.

During this time, she used the phone Callum had given her, contacting him once with an international SIM card to tell him she was in the clear and not to worry. She also said she'd head to Germany in seven days. By then, Everett's bodyguards would probably have left Spain, and she wouldn't have to worry about getting caught stepping out.

Callum was thrilled for her and shared his plan. He would also head to Germany in seven days to personally hand their son back to her and help her settle in, eliminating any future threats. Since it involved Mateo, he couldn't trust anyone else to do it; he had to take care of it himself. After expressing her gratitude repeatedly, Selena agreed to the plan. © 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
